The Sugar Substitute Paradox: Xylitol's Hidden Risks A recent study suggests that xylitol, an artificial sweetener commonly used in sugar free jam and chewing gum, may be linked to increased risks of heart attacks and strokes.
Researchers presented their findings at the European Society of Cardiology annual congress in Munich, sparking concerns about the cardiovascular safety of this widely consumed sweetener.
The study analyzed data from 17,710 participants over several years and found that higher blood levels of xylitol were associated with a significantly greater risk – 57 percent – of major cardiovascular events compared to those with the lowest levels.
