The recent floods that ravaged parts of the Nepal-Tibet border region have left hundreds dead, nearly 1,000 missing, and countless more injured. The sheer scale of destruction is a stark reminder of the devastating power of natural disasters.

A landslide in the Himalayas triggered the flood, sweeping away a large glacier or parts of it, which unleashed a torrent of water that caused destruction at least 62 miles downriver from the border. Initially reported as a 4.4-magnitude earthquake, the seismic activity was later revised to a 5.2-magnitude landslide.

The Himalayas are warming faster than any other region on Earth, with temperatures rising by up to 3 degrees Celsius in some areas. This rapid melting of glaciers and ice caps has triggered landslides, avalanches, and floods throughout the region. Similar phenomena are being observed globally – from retreating glaciers in Alaska to intensifying monsoon rains in India.

The Nepal government’s response to the disaster is commendable, with emergency control rooms established to facilitate search, rescue, and consular assistance. However, the bigger question remains: Are we doing enough to address the root cause of these disasters? The United States has offered aid, but it pales in comparison to what’s needed.

The aftermath of such disasters often raises questions about development and infrastructure. Balancing economic growth with environmental concerns is a delicate task. In Nepal, the government has prioritized hydropower projects along the Trishuli River, which was among the most affected areas. While these projects can provide clean energy and revenue, they also carry risks – particularly in a region prone to landslides.

The global trend of extreme weather events becoming more frequent and severe due to rising temperatures is unmistakable. The Nepal floods are not an isolated incident; they’re part of this larger pattern. We can no longer afford to treat these events as mere natural disasters; we must confront their root cause – climate change.

The international community must come together to share knowledge, resources, and expertise in addressing climate change. It’s time for governments to move beyond platitudes and commitments, and take concrete action to reduce emissions, invest in renewable energy, and adapt to the changing climate. The world has witnessed the devastation; it’s now up to us to prevent more of the same.

In Nepal, the people are resilient and resourceful, but they need support from their governments and international partners. We owe it to them – and to ourselves – to act with urgency and conviction in addressing this global challenge.
