Harnessing Heat: The Unlikely Ally in the Fight Against Rising Energy Bills

As energy bills continue to soar, homeowners are seeking ways to cut costs without sacrificing comfort. Amidst advice on draught-proofing and double-glazing, a more innovative solution has emerged: repurposing datacentre heat as free hot water. This concept may sound like science fiction, but it’s already being put into practice by companies like heata.

For Giles Gibson, a London homeowner who installed one of these systems last year, the benefits have been tangible. His four-bedroom house now enjoys reduced hot water bills, estimated to be between £10 and £15 per month less than before. “It adds up over a year,” Gibson notes. He emphasizes that installing such a system is a no-brainer – a sentiment echoed by Charlie Beharrell, commercial director of heata.

The system works as follows: a compact computer server is attached to the hot water cylinder in homes with vented, unpressurised cylinders. The server generates heat as it operates and transfers it directly to the cylinder without additional plumbing required. Heata covers the cost of electricity used by the server, while homeowners pay for fibre broadband connection fees.

This concept isn’t a panacea for all energy woes but is an intriguing example of how innovative thinking can tackle waste heat generated by datacentres on a domestic scale. Millions of homes in the UK are equipped with vented water cylinders, making this solution potentially accessible to a large portion of the population. However, there are caveats: heata’s system isn’t suitable for homes with combi boilers, and an unvented cylinder version is currently in development.

Another project in Essex stores matchbox-sized computers together to form mini datacentres that recycle energy generated by processing tasks. The HeatHub units made by thermify work similarly but use mineral oil to transfer heat from rows of Raspberry Pi computers to radiators. The cost of these systems varies depending on the size of the home and energy requirements.

For an average-sized home, the monthly fee could be around £90, which includes installation, leasing, repairs, and a minimum 10-year contract. While this may seem steep upfront, the long-term savings – estimated at 14% reduction in bill costs compared to homes with gas boilers and 34% for those with heat pumps over a 15-year period – could make it an attractive option.

These projects align with broader environmental concerns: large datacentres continue to strain the environment, while innovative solutions like heata and thermify reduce waste heat and offer a glimpse into a more sustainable future for home heating systems. The challenge ahead lies in scaling up these technologies and ensuring widespread adoption.

For homeowners, this means being open to exploring new solutions that may require some upfront investment but promise significant long-term benefits. As Beharrell notes, “the primary heating system is working a lot less hard to heat the water” thanks to these innovative systems.
